Water

The Garden of the XXI Century in Zürich is located on the ridge that separates the valleys of the Limmat, Glatt and Furtbach rivers. Due to the garden's orientation to the north side of the ridge, it lies within the watershed of the Glatt. All the water that precipitates on our site flows through urbanized water structures into the Glatt, which then flows into the Rhine and downstream into the North Sea.

However, there is also water that flows into the garden. As the entire campus area has been built over, some of the water can no longer run off exclusively following the natural topography. As a result, some of this surface water is pushed out of the slope into our garden leading to waterlogging in days or even weeks after heavy rainfall.
